Within minutes of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's announcement that she would retire from the Supreme Court, "alerts" started flooding my e-mail.
People for the American Way -- liberals -- weighed in first. Its president, Ralph Neas, called on President Bush "to consult with senators from both parties to identify a consensus nominee, and to reject the demands of far-right leaders for an aggressively activist ideologue who would ensure a divisive confirmation battle."
The Indiana Judicial Confirmation Network -- conservatives -- sounded the next alarm. "This is the moment we've been waiting for. Let's get a strategy together for the chess game that is about to unfold."
