Washington, D.C. Wendy E. Long, counsel to The Judicial Confirmation Network (www.judicialnetwork.com), today made the following statement regarding a press report that U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) had questioned President Bush's Supreme Court nominee, Judge John G. Roberts, about his personal religious beliefs:
"Regardless of Senator Durbin's intentions, his reported questioning of Judge Roberts smacks of a religious test for judicial office, which is offensive to all Americans whatever their religious beliefs.
"Unfortunately, Senator Durbin is a repeat offender and some of his colleagues have also pursued exactly this line of attack in the past against judges of the Catholic faith.
"Senator Durbin's colleagues in the United States Senate need to publicly disassociate themselves from him for this outrageous behavior. The American people are waiting."
