"No" Votes on Committee Would Demand Rejection of Judicial Conservatism

September 22, 2005

Judicial Confirmation Network counsel Wendy E. Long made the following comments this afternoon:

"We can take two things away from today's committee vote. First, that the President will nominate highly qualified judicial conservatives in the mold of Justices Scalia and Thomas and that a nominee should not be voted down because of his or her judicial conservatism. Second, for those who did not vote for Roberts, it was largely due to their frustration that Roberts would not reject his judicial conservative philosophy. Certainly, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was not asked to reject her liberal philosophy. It is unfortunate that some on this Committee would vote 'no' on any nominee simply because that nominee is unwilling to reject his or her conservative philosophy in support of a liberal activist agenda."
