Washington, D.C. Wendy E. Long, counsel to The Judicial Confirmation Network (www.judicialnetwork.com), today made the following statement on the Senate Judiciary Committee vote reporting to the Senate floor the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit:
"There they go again.
"Is anyone really surprised at the failure of Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats to vote on the merits of Brett Kavanaugh? Like the votes on Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito, this vote says zero about the nominee. He has stellar qualifications as a prosecutor, private lawyer, top executive branch officer, and public servant of great integrity.
"But this partisan committee vote throws a spotlight on Minority Leader Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats. If they sink to new levels of partisanship and pettiness and actually try to filibuster Brett Kavanaugh, Americans in key states will react just as they did when former Senate Democrat leader Tom Daschle did the same thing. Americans care about judges and the role of the courts in our society.
"It's ironic that Democrats appear poised to commit political suicide by attempting a filibuster of another judge which can't possibly succeed just as the first very successful term of the Roberts Court is winding down, and the quality of this President's judicial nominees is becoming even more clear. If Democrats are really that foolish, it would be a great outcome for Majority Leader Frist to use the nomination of Kavanaugh or any other filibustered nominee to clarify in the Senate rules that the Constitution and two centuries of tradition dictate that Senators should simply vote 'yes' or 'no' on judges, and put this issue to rest once and for all."
