MEMORANDUM

May 14, 2007

An important new poll, released jointly today by JCN and the Ethics and Public Policy Center, shows that public support for overturning Roe v. Wade and restoring abortion policy to the democratic process increases dramatically when voters are informed about the reality of Roe. JCN's Wendy Long and EPPC's Ed Whelan have prepared a memo on the poll results, which is being sent out to pro-life, pro-family, and judicial restraint leaders nationwide.

"We hope this poll will help to kindle a national education and discussion about Roe and what its overturning will mean," said Long. "Even the briefest acquaintance with some of the facts about Roe generated a swing of 16 points in the direction of favoring Roe's reversal. The swing among Democrats was a full 26 points in the direction of favoring reversal. Republicans, even before the survey, favored overturning Roe by 60 to 32 percent. And after the few quick facts learned in the survey, Republican support for overturning Roe stood at 67 percent, with only 29 against overturning."

"This is very revealing, and very encouraging," Long said. "We've known for decades that misinformation about Roe has skewed past polls. What was surprising was the movement we saw based on a little bit of factual information conveyed in the survey itself. Just think what a real, factual, thoughtful national discussion on this subject could do."
