CBNNews.com - A Senate committee is holding hearings Wednesday on President Obama's controversial judicial nominee, District Judge David Hamilton.

The president says Hamilton is a moderate. But conservative groups are calling him an extreme liberal.

They point out that Hamilton was a former leader in the American Civil Liberties Union.

As a judge, he ordered the Indiana House of Representatives not to allow legislative prayers that mention Jesus. But he did allow prayers that mention Allah.

Hamilton also spent seven years blocking Indiana's informed consent law on abortion. Those rulings were later overturned.

Gary Marx of the Judicial Confirmation Network says he's hoping some senators will hold President Obama accountable on his judicial nominees.

"At the end of the day, I think there are some senators who believe the true role of the judge is not to be an activist," Marx told CBN News. "A judge should not to impose their own personal polices from the bench and that's going to moderate some of those judges and hopefully help Obama follow though on his promise to be a trans-partisan leader. This initial nomination of Judge David Hamilton does not bode well though."

A vote on Hamilton is expected soon.
